Table Tennis Equipment: From Table Tennis Balls to Table Tennis Nets

Table tennis stands tall in being one of the most popular of sports in the world. At its most basic, table tennis stands to be a scaled down version of tennis, where equipment, playing court, and playing strategy and style are concerned. There are scoring and gameplay variations, but bottom line, table tennis’s basic concept is no different from that of a regular tennis game.

In tennis, the elements of ball control, force, stamina and power are quite essential. In table tennis, considering that the playing field is smaller, the capacity to control these elements are quite essential for a table tennis player’s success in the course of a table tennis game. A standard tennis court is divided by a net, which is no different in table tennis, as a table tennis table is divided by a table tennis net. In table tennis, scaled down versions of a standard tennis racket is utilized, only different in construction in the sense that a different variety of material is being utilized in table tennis rackets, which are perfectly complemented to work with table tennis balls.

History notes that table tennis owes its origins to the Victorians of the 1880s, who played table tennis games as after-dinner forms of entertainment. The popularity of the game prompted the development of table tennis equipment, eventually defining table tennis as a sport, which the world has embraced with open arms.

Being one of the most popular sports in the world today, it isn’t surprising to know that there are defined requirements in the various table tennis equipments prevailing in the world today.

Here are some of the definitions which define the most common of table tennis equipments: The Ball and Table Tennis Nets.

Table Tennis Nets

Serving the same function to that of standard tennis nets, table tennis nets divide the table tennis table into two, defining the two courts in a table tennis game. Officially, table tennis nets are rated to be six inches high, and are commonly made from corded material. Table tennis nets are propped up by “posts”, functioning are the holders for table tennis nets.

Table Tennis Balls

Table tennis balls are made of a celluloid material, are gas-filled, and come with a matte finish. International rules specify that table tennis balls should have a diameter of 40 mm, weighing 2.7 grams, and they could either be colored orange or white. There are 40 mm, 44 mm and 54 mm varieties of table tennis balls, though, but the 40 mm variety is stapled as the international standard used in table tennis competitions.

So there you have it. International definitions of the two most prevalent of table tennis equipments: the table tennis ball and the table tennis nets.
