Swimming pool heaters are must-haves for any pool owner. It is definitely great to have one so you can extend your swimming pool sessions even after summer or during a cold summer night. There are several types of swimming pool heaters available. There are those that run on electricity while others use natural gas or propane gas. There are also swimming pool heaters specifically designed for either an inground swimming pool or an above ground pool.

Swimming pool heaters vary in size and power and you would need to consider the amount of water in your swimming pool in order to choose the right heater. Additionally, you should also consider the general climate or temperature in your area when purchasing swimming pool heaters.

The ideal pool water temperature is around 78 to 80 degrees. Swimming pool heaters utilize thermostats that allow you to adjust the water’s temperature to the optimum level.
If you have a pool combined with a hot tub, you can look for a heater with two separate thermostats so you can keep the hot tub water warmer than the pool water.

Electric swimming pool heaters cost more and are harder to maintain. Those that run off on propane gas are affordable and easy to use. The most expensive swimming pool heaters are the solar types, which utilize electric pumps that carry the pool water to the solar panels that warm the water.

Aside from the price and the above-mentioned features, other things to consider when shopping for swimming pool heaters are capacity, fuel efficiency, rust resistance, warranty, and BTU (British Thermal Units) output.

BTU is the unit of measurement used to indicate the required energy in order to raise the water temperature by one degree Fahrenheit. The BTU of most swimming pool heaters ranges from 75,000 to 400,000. Those with higher BTU amount will heat the water faster. These units, obviously, cost more.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, most swimming pool heaters are about 80 percent efficient but you can find some with higher efficiency rating. A good way to maximize the heat generated by your pool heater is to use a pool cover with good insulation, which helps minimize heat loss.

Swimming pool heaters will certainly allow you more time to enjoy swimming. Just remember to study the features of the different brands and choose not only what will fit your budget but also what will suit your pool best.
