Survival Strategies in the Wild
Alright, nature trekking is probably the best experience you will ever have. Nothing is more
enjoyable than watching animals, the birds, the trees, the flowing river, the calmness of the atmosphere, the
simplicity of nature, the green plains and the whole experience of being away from the city life is incomparable.
But the thought of being lost in the wild, without food, shelter, no everything useful, scares most people. But
there are those adventurous people who have made it to their homes sound and safe, after being lost in the wild for
weeks and even months. How did they do that? How did their survival instincts help them?
You may have probably seen survival stories similar to the introduction on TV
or on newspapers – people who opted to spend Father’s day on the wild or on a nature trip. After days of exploring
the trees, they were lost and could not find their way back to the camp site. If you know how to read the map and
use the compass, you are just so lucky but even with these tools, you need to stay alive, especially if you ran out
of food along the way. As a survival tip, the first thing you need to do is find a good shelter. If you are in the
woods, it will be a lot easier, since you can use twigs and branches to form a simple thatching.
If you are on the plains or desert, your best protection from the rain or the sun are your
clothes, blankets, shrubs or rock formations. Your next survival step is to find water. Remember that you can live
for three days without water. Most lost trekkers will usually take the route home on the river banks. So just
follow your map. If you don’t have, listen for river streams. If you are in the thickest of forest¸ look for
shelters or natural dips. Food may still be a priority for you next to going home. Luckily, you can find food in
desert cacti, berries, fruits, fish, if you are trekking near the river, or by hunting deer or wild rodents.
Defending your self from predators like bears and wolves is also one very important survival
strategy. Build fires during the night to scare animals. Go in packs during daylight and never leaver your
companion. In case of injury caused by accident or animal attack, give it a first aid. Remember, to always stay
near the river and stay together.
