The Boulder Outdoor Survival School is a survival school that is of the largest
tradition in the world. It is ranked as being the oldest institution in that category. Larry Dean Olsen
established the school in 1968. A wilderness program is what it initially offered. The institution
initialized this program in order to bring physical and mental challenges to the programs participants.
It was in 1985 that the program was expanded when the school was administered by David
Wescott,. The skills of Puebloan cultures were added into BOSS’ curriculum.
The philosophy of Boulder Outdoor Survival School is teaching its participants the techniques of
survival without utilizing any form of technology. A field course is included in the survival training, for
the purposes of instructing the participants to carry light items such as clothes on their back, a poncho, knife
and other essential items. No sleeping bags or tents are carried by the students of the program. This
not only teaches, but also encourages participants, to be part of the wilderness.
BOSS was incorporated in 1980 as a private institution in Boulder, Utah. Boulder, Colorado
is home to its marketing office. The marketing office was opened by Josh Bernstein. He began as one of
the programs apprentices. He then rose in ranking and became a member of staff. He then returned to
become a Marketing Administrative Director of the institution in 1994. The restructuring of Boulder Outdoor
Survival School was commenced by Josh Bernstein, incorporating more importance on traditional cultures. He
was also famous for bringing more media attention to the institution.
In 1997, John Bernstein then went on to be the CEO of Boulder Outdoor Survival School. Up
until the present day, he still remains to be the president and owner of BOSS. Bernstein joined the Discovery
Channel on April 2007 from the History Channel. A prime-time series is under development which will be shown
on the Discovery Channel with which will be produced and hosted by John Bernstein.
