Grass Skiing Allows you to Ski Year Round
In order to continue training year round, grass skiing was invented in Germany in 1966 by
Richard Martin. In 1968 he took the concept to France where the idea caught on quite well. It became a crucial part
of Alpine Skiing training by the mid-80s. It now has become a sport unto itself and has worldwide acceptance and
competitions with different grass events. They now hold an annual Grass Skiing World Cup championship.
Until 2003 the actual following for grass skiing was not that large. Many people have begun to
love the sport because you are able to enjoying skiing throughout the year. It also keeps alpine skiers in top
condition all year and helps them work on their individual techniques even when there is no snow.
Grass skiing can be enjoyed by anyone that is in good physical condition. It is great fun for
beginners and even children can take up the sport. Taking up grass skiing gives the beginner a head start in
learning all the necessary techniques required for snow skiing before winter even begins.
When you are grass skiing you ski down special grass slopes using grass skis. There are grass
skiing centers available so that you can go and train during the off season. Many of them can be found in
Switzerland, Austria, Iran, China, Japan, and throughout Europe. Many people have successfully set up small grass
runs on their own property. However, at an actual skiing center you can learn from professionals versus attempting
to teach yourself.
If you are interested in giving grass skiing a try you can visit ski camps, or try ski clubs and
associations they often organize courses for you to take. With this type of organized instructions you can find
courses that are designed specifically for your ability level.
Grass skis are short skis and have either tracks or wheels attached to the boot. If you are a
beginner then the wheeled grass skis will work well for you. You can use them in a variety of terrains and they are
versatile enough to do some freestyle grass skiing. The track grass skis are made for specially designed and
prepared grass slopes. They are for the more experienced and competitive skier because they are designed for
downhill skiing at fast speeds. Part of your equipment should include a helmet, leg and elbow pads, and ski poles.
You can find grass skiing equipment at sporting good stores, from the manufacturer, or specialized ski resorts.
