Mace: Alternatives to Stun Guns

Self defense products are items which people have come to embrace as necessities. With the dangers of living in these times constantly evolving, one just can’t be sure of what waits around the corner. With self defense products, people have a fighting chance of being saved from harm, facilitating a defense against those aimed to cause harm.

Stun guns are among the most popular of self defense products sold in the world today. Basically, stun guns are small items which pack quite an electric charge, enough to stun would be assailants, stopping them on their tracks. The downside with stun guns is that one has to physically be at close proximity to an assailant or mugger or threat, for users to successfully use their stun guns.

This is where Mace, another popular self defense product currently sold to consumers all over the world, shine over stun guns, going beyond the proximity limitation of stun guns.

Basically, Mace is originally a product named “Chemical Mace” and was manufactured by Lake Erie Chemical, which is a former division of Smith and Wesson. This all happened in 1962. Today, mace is a registered trademark of Mace Security International, which is responsible for the release of Mace products.

Originally, the formulation of mace consisted of a 1% CN gas mixed in a solvent of propylene glycol, sec-butanol, dipropylene glycol methyl ether and cyclohexene. Oleoresin Capsicum is also known to be added into certain mace formulations. The original Mace was actually tear gas, contrary to the Mace sold today by Mace Security International which is basically pepper spray. Burning sensation on the affected area is the most common effect of Mace when used on a person. This burning sensation may not have the electric charge of stun guns, but is enough to halt and stun assailants in their tracks. Mace contact with eyes are known to cause automatic eye closing, as intense pain in one’s eyes is sure to be. Inhaling it also causes problems for assailants, as suffocating is what happens when it is inhaled. The duration of Mace’s effects vary, some reaching between 30 minutes to hours, depending on exposure, as well as with the applied treatment.

With burning sensation, eye pains and suffocation, overwhelming would be assailants would be easy, and could be done from a distance, thus facilitating self defense, easy and fast. When talking about self defense products sure to halt assailants, Mace would be just the thing.
