Downhill Mountain Biking
When mountain
biking made its advent as a sport, almost no one expected that it would develop into something adventurous as what
it is now, an extreme sport. Mountain biking has several disciplines within it, and each requires its own mastery.
Whatever discipline you choose, though, mountain biking as a sport is the ultimate thrill-seeker's domain. Every
year, more and more people participate in this sport, which makes mountain biking one of the most popular extreme
sports in history.
Within mountain biking, there are many disciplines. The one that is perhaps the most extreme is
downhill mountain biking. Riding one's bike down the mountain is a wonderful, adrenaline-rush of an experience and
will give any thrill seeker the rush he or she is looking for.
Simply speaking, downhill mountain biking is just what it sounds like. You ride
your bike downhill, at a very extreme speed. This is also known as DH among those who are mountain biking
"addicts." The other major type of mountain biking is cross-country, which is much more concerned with racing,
although in that case as well, riders are going downhill. Mountain bikes are specifically created for downhill
mountain biking, so that they are equipped with suspension for both the rear and front. The bikes' tube framing is
usually heavier than that used in other types of mountain bikes. Downhill mountain bikes usually weigh from 40 to
50 pounds.
Bikes that are specifically meant for downhill mountain biking are not used for the uphill
climb. Instead, riders are lifted to the top of hills by ski lifts, from where they can then ride their bikes down.
This type of downhill riding is very physically demanding and can also be dangerous. Therefore, you need to take a
great deal of precaution.
Stunts required generally include 40-foot jumps, from which the rider drops to a distance of 10
feet or more, and the path the rider takes is usually very steep and rough throughout the complete stretch. For
most mountain bikers, though, this is exactly the type of challenge and risk they're looking for. Therefore, the
demand and danger that they face is truly to be expected.
Nevertheless, if you are all mountain biker, you should still don your gear in full, including
kneepads, helmet, goggles and body suit.
If you're an experienced mountain biker or just looking to get started, you should know that you
can now choose from many locations to ride. It is perhaps telling to say that many of the most satisfied riders are
also those that have taken the most risks. Of course, this should be true, since this type of mountain biking is
indeed all about the risk anyway, and this is exactly what attracts riders to it.
