Lacrosse Helmet
Lacrosse Helmet: Different Types and Buying Tips
Head protection is very important in playing lacrosse since it is a contact sport and one where
rough action is inevitable such as falling or getting hit by a ball, a shaft or another player. A lacrosse
helmet is specifically designed to provide adequate protection to a player’s head and face. The face area
of a lacrosse helmet has a set of grills to shield the face from an oncoming ball without limiting vision. The chin
and jaw area is typically protruded for extra protection.
There are three types of lacrosse helmets based on the material they are made of – steel,
titanium and chrome helmets. The type of steel used to make a steel lacrosse helmet is black steel, which is
strengthened with iron oxides. It provides great resistance to heat so it is the helmet of choice for playing
during summer or in any place with generally hot weather.
A lighter and more rigid alternative to a steel lacrosse helmet is one made of titanium.
Actually, this helmet can be made of an alloy of chrome and titanium or of pure titanium.
A titanium lacrosse helmet is the helmet of choice for lacrosse goalies because it said to improve the line of
vision.
A chrome lacrosse helmet is somewhat lightweight although a bit heavier than a titanium helmet.
It offers less rigidity but is still durable, except that it can be custom shaped or its design can have curves and
bends. It is more susceptible to chipping and dents than a titanium helmet.
When choosing a lacrosse helmet, durability should be your first consideration. You want to make
sure that you buy a lacrosse helmet that does not break, crack, or dent easily. Check if the outer shell of the
lacrosse helmet is compact and shock-absorbent. Likewise, the face guard should be hard and strong enough to absorb
the impact from balls or sticks.
The fit of the lacrosse helmet is also very important. It has to be snug but also comfortable
when you wear it over your head. Choose one with straps that allow you to adjust the fit whenever you need to
loosen or tighten it. A lacrosse helmet should provide your head with adequate cover. Check if the top of the
helmet is not restricting your vision.
Lastly, look for a comfortable lacrosse helmet. Lacrosse is a rough contact sport so you the
inside of the helmet should be well-padded to cushion likely blows, falls, hits, etcetera. You also do not
want the lacrosse helmet to be too heavy because that will easily tire you so look for lightweight designs that
will not strain your neck and shoulders.
