Elk Hunting

Elk hunting is rapidly becoming one of the most popular forms of big game hunting. Its wide range of species, prized antlers, and time honored traditions make it an ideal form of hunting for thousands. Here are a few reasons why elk hunting can benefit you considerably.

There are many reasons hunters enjoy elk hunting. Their meat, pelts, and antlers alone is enough reason for some. Intensely high in protein and iron and low in fat, elk meat is considered a healthier alternative to beef or pork. Their pelts are often used as blankets or rugs, while their antlers are considered beautiful, rustic additions to cabins, households, and more. In some cases, they've even been used in making furniture. Even the velvet rubbed off of the antlers has been used widely in alternative medicine.

In some areas of the world, elk are considered an invasive species due to their extreme adaptability. In such cases, many hunters are able to benefit significantly by helping to keep their numbers down. Their wide range of species also makes for a variety of different beautiful pelts and antlers to collect.

The ritual of elk hunting is also an enchanting and exhilarating aspect that hunters around the world enjoy. Most elk hunting begins near their rutting season, when males are busily searching for females. Hunters benefit from using a specially crafted bugle that imitates the mating call of female elk. However, while the call is useful in attracting males, it's widely agreed that one shouldn't depend entirely on this method. Following tracks, scat, tree rubbings, and other signs of an elk's presence is just as essential as using the bugle.

What many new hunters don't realize is that the time of day also drastically affects your chances of bagging an elk. Most elks begin sounding mating calls when the weather is colder and darker. Thus, using your bugle during the wrong time of the day may give you away. Be sure to keep in mind your scent as well—there have been many hunts that were inadvertently thwarted due to standing upwind of an animal.

If you're new to elk hunting, a guided hunt is a great way to ease yourself into the sport. Guided hunts are unique in that you are assigned a cabin or a camp ground for a period of several days. Trained professionals are more than happy to lead you through a designated plot of land. While killing an elk isn't guaranteed, you will be able to enjoy a luxurious, rustic stay nonetheless.
