Dirt Bike Motocross Racing

Characteristics of Dirt Bike Motocross Racing

Dirt bikes and ATVs are used as the primary vehicles of an exciting dirt bike motocross racing event, or motocross racing for short.

Dirt bike motocross racing is mainly a number of component races. These smaller races are called heats. Sometimes, racers have to beat certain criteria, such as time, in order to qualify for the next heat.

Each dirt bike motocross racing event is about the time elapsed plus one or two laps. Sometimes, the race is measured in a predetermined number of laps. As a general rule, top level racing events have a long duration. Amateur races or novice races have a shorter duration, sometimes only lasting 10 minutes. As the time of the race is reached, a checkered flag is waved around. This means that there are now only one or two laps in the race remaining.

Dirt bike motocross racing is unique from most other forms of motor sport. For example, all riders start alongside each other. When the start gun fires, everyone starts simultaneously. In most other races, vehicles start behind one another.

In a standard motocross racing event, there would be around 30 to 40 riders racing around a dirt track.

The track for dirt bike motocross racing is challenging and dangerous. It consists of a wide dirt road that is usually 1 to 2 miles long. It incorporates the natural lay of the area resulting in undulations such as slight hills and valleys. To make it more challenging, man made obstacles such as jumps and mud pits are added. However, these man made obstacles may not be present in some tracks and only features natural elements.

What adds to the excitement is that dirt bike motocross racing is very visually appealing. Racers perform death defying leaps. They turn visibly against traction, kicking up an enormous amount of mud and dirt behind them. Audiences can clearly see the physical effort of the racers as they struggle to control their dirt bikes.

One must be able to differentiate motocross racing and off road racing. The latter puts greater emphasis on natural terrain and obstacles. Off road racing is a faster but much longer race. The race may feature a set amount of laps to do or a time frame to finish a certain course.

Motocross racing is a beginner’s sport for those who want to learn more about the other motor sports. In fact, it has been noted that small children as young as 6 years old can join in the 50 cc division.
