Professional Darts
The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC)
One of the biggest names in the darting industry is the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC),
which is an organization established in the United Kingdom in 1992 with the objective of taking the dart-shooting
sport to new heights. This organization is now managed and maintained by professional darters, with
Barry Hearn as the chairman. Throughout their successes, the Professional Darts Corporation is now known as
the “Premiership of Darts”.
The Origin
The professional darts in Britain during the early days has hemorrhaged
sponsors and declined from television screen leaving the yearly British Darts Organization (BDO) World Championship
as the only televised event. However, some of the professional darts players felt that not enough was being
done toe encourage new sponsors into their favorite sport and the television coverage must be greater just one
event a year. As a result, 16 of those professional darts players left to form their own darts organization,
the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) originally known as the World Darts Council (WDC) in 1992.
With the establishment of the Professional Darts Corporation, the professional darts players
were given more freedom of movement between the organizations, however during those times; any player who reaches
the last 16 of either world championship cannot switch promotions the following year. That rule was then
maintained by the Professional Darts Corporation and was said to have continued for years. Among the most
established names in the Professional Darts Corporation list are Ronnie Baxter, Richie Burnett, Roland Scholten,
Wayne Mardle, Chris Mason, and Kevin Painter. Several other professional darts players would later make the
switch to the organization.
The Image of the PDC Games
Radically, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) changed the perception of professional
darts. They began to attract a visually younger audience of both sexes, and through the years it was not
uncommon to see musicians, politicians, boxers, football players, and other sporting personalities attending the
events produced by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Most of the players participating the event
would enter matches with their own signature them music whilst flanked by security men and female valets down to
the oche. Aside from that, a classy atmosphere was created by employing smoke machines as well as
pyrotechnics during those elaborate entrances. With these changes, the darting atmosphere somehow seems
similar to that in the boxing or wrestling.
There are also some instances in the game when the professional darts players only sip iced
water during their matches. Though this was intended to further the image of the game produced by the
Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) which has been tarnished by the professional darts players’ reputation for
consuming large quantities of alcohol, the water was however required by the organization to prevent dehydration
during the Professional Darts Corporation matches.
The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) games are also noted for those giant video screens that
relayed the actions for the large crowds inside the venues. This technique was also considered as this would
light up the useful bulb on a large scoring board at the side of the stage for the crowd’s benefit. With
those lights and compressed crowds during the Professional Darts Corporation matches, the temperature inside the
venues would be measure at over 100 degree Fahrenheit.
