Lawn Darts Banned From Sale
Who among you are not familiar with lawn darts? Well, lawn darts were played by many
people around the world for centuries. Just like the usual game of dart, lawn darts is a fun and enjoyable
social game. It is also known as “lawn jarts” and is in the first place played by way of tossing underhanded
a large steel lawn dart that has a plastic fins. The dart is usually tossed back and forth to about two
huge hoops, and the objective of this game is to get the lawn dart into the circle marked on the ground. The
player will receive points for every dart that makes it into circle.
Although lawn darts are obviously a fun game, it is not sold in stores particularly in the
United States nowadays. It was actually banned from sale in the United States since December 19, 1988.
As numerous reports have noted, the lawn darts banning in the US was highly considered by the authority due to some
injury reports. It was noted that the lawn darts, which were used in the outdoor game, have been responsible
for the deaths of about three children in record and thousands of injured kids. One of the recently reported
injury occurred in 1997 when a year old boy suffered a serious brain injury after a lawn dart pierced his
skull. There was also another case in which a seven-year old girl was impaled in the head by an errant
toss.
The banning of lawn darts was actually proposed by the Consumer Product Safety
Commission in the United States, and the law is still active up to these days. Well, prior to the banning of the
lawn darts in the United States, the lawn darts were sold in sets that typically composed of four large darts and
two targets. They were usually sold in packages with other sports equipment. The lawn darts were then
noted that to possess long steel points and it is made of heavy metal with a length of about 12 inches. It
even has a weighted plastic tip on one end and three plastic fins on a rod at the other end, making it probably one
of the really dangerous toys that kids could get their hands on. It is worthy to note that although the tip
of the lawn darts may not be sharp enough to be obviously dangerous, the lawn darts can cause skull punctures and
some other serious injuries as what are noted in those injury cases.
However, despite the fact that lawn darts are already banned from sale, some of these dangerous
items may still be found in the garages, basements, and even in some second-hand stores. Many people who are
still looking for these products even considered such places as the best options to find lawn darts. So,
knowing this fact, the law further mandates that parents must destroy lawn darts found on their vicinities as soon
as possible in order to avoid any possible accident. The law even holds the rule that lawn darts should not
be given away since they may be of harm to others.
