Arcade Dartboard

Darts is the game to play in bar or especially in a pub. In the United Kingdom, darts is not merely popular, its part and parcel of the local culture and the local legends. It may not seem like much really at first. It looks like throwing large pins at a big round wooden-ish disk.  That’s exactly what it is actually. Darts is one of the oldest games known to man and while it is not advisable to be playing while intoxicated, the game certainly has a passionate following in bar all across the country and indeed the world.

To play darts you need both darts and a dartboard. Dartboards have a  great history going back many years.  It goes all the way to the United Kingdom to times before the First World War even started. That’s how far back the story of the dartboard goes. In those days dartboards were made of solid blocks of wood. If you thought that’s what they always were, then you are quite wrong. Elm wood was the wood of choice back in those days and every single night the poor barkeep had to soak the wood to heal the holes that were made from the darts. It was messy and quite time consuming. This changed quite a bit when a modeling clay company called Nodor started making dartboards from Sisal fibers. They took bundles of the sisal fibers and bound them together. These were then surrounded by a metal band and compressed into a disk. Since the disk was made up of fibres, the darts just fell into the gaps made by the fibers and made no holes. So maintenance was much easier and the product became a hit.

Of course dartboards have come a long way since those days. In fact with the electronics revolutions in the last few decades dartboards are now almost robots. Most dartboards are now in a form called an arcade dartboard. An arcade dartboard is what you get when you supplement a regular dart board with all sorts of paraphernalia and lights and a sturdy tall case. When darts started becoming less and less popular, especially when it started to take a second place to arcade video games certain innovators decided to revamp the classic game to use an arcade dartboard.

An arcade dartboard can come in various shapes and sizes but the typical idea is that and arcade dartboard will turn darts into something that’s as visually appealing as an arcade video game. An arcade dartboard will have lights on the board to show where the dart landed. An arcade dartboard will have a giant scrolling sign that can display the players name. An arcade dartboard will have an electronic scoreboard to keep track of the score. An arcade dartboard will have speaker for sound effects when something happens. In the changing world it was just too much to expect that even a dartboard wouldn’t turn into an arcade dartboard.
