Backpacking Tents
No matter what the weather holds in store, backpacking tents are an essential
item for all those who set off camping. At its basic, it offers protection from both the sun and rain alike (and
yes, from bugs too!), whilst ensuring that campers enjoy a modicum of privacy when they so wish.
A visit to the local store would present potential campers with an array of backpacking tents to
choose from. Namely, freestanding tents, non-freestanding tents, one person tents, family tents, 3 season tents, 4
season tents, double wall tents, single wall tents, tents with vestibules and base camp tents, to list but a
few.
With so many designs and options to choose from, buying backpacking tents may indeed seem to be
a daunting task, at first. Therefore it is imperative that backpackers first evaluate their camping style prior to
purchasing their tent. For instance, see if your backpacking style is “minimalist” or “ultra-light” (here weight is
of foremost importance), or if it is “lightweight” (this is where weight and comfort are both given due
consideration and a suitable balance between them is achieved), or if it is “deluxe” (this is where comfort and
convenience override any weight considerations). If your backpacking style is identified as minimalist or
light-weight, it is advisable to search for backpacking tents made with most new technologies or fabrics, as these
are generally guaranteed to meet your requirements
Then backpackers need to confirm if the proposed camping trip is one they wish to embark on
alone or with family/friends, so as to ascertain the optimal tent size and its livability. With this in mind,
backpacking tents are categorized in accordance to the sleeping capacity offered by each, be it solo, 2-people,
3-people or be it of the family variety.
Another factor that warrants consideration, when choosing backpacking tents is the prevailing
weather conditions. For instance if it is snowing, a 4-seasons tents is deemed suitable, while campers generally
choose a 3-seasons tent in more temperate climates.
Backpacking tents come in an assortment of designs too (tunnels, domes and
wedges), so when narrowing the vast choice open to a suitable few, it is important to consider shape (the more
poles used the sturdier a tent is said to be), space, weight, breathability, price and durability. Most of all,
however, prior to purchasing backpacking tents, it is always advisable to heed the maxim “try before you buy”, so
that the degree of difficulty in setting the tent up can be ascertained at the store itself, whilst ensuring that
all essential parts are intact, too. By doing this, potential campers ensure that no unpleasant surprises
(tent-wise, at least) await them, once outdoors.
