Backpacker Travel

Possibly, our first introduction to the joys of backpacker travel was in the form of the “Happy Wanderer” song, which so aptly voiced the sentiments “I love to go a-wandering, along the mountain track, and as I go I love to sing, my knapsack on my back.”

The carefree joy and spirit of adventure is never more apparent than when engaging in backpacker travel. Especially in times of economic downturn, it is indeed practical, as it is a low cost alternative to other more traditional forms of travel; and so is favored by most students who want to experience the joy of travel without incurring any undue expense.

However before embarking on backpacker travel, there are a few points to note, so as to ensure a safe and hassle-free trip. For instance, it is always prudent to ensure that your passport is up-to-date and that all required visas are obtained prior to setting off on your journey. Applying for travel insurance too, is strongly recommended, so as to minimize any unexpected costs that might result in the event of a sudden illness or accident.

Backpacker travel differs greatly from commercialized modes of travel, and is not for the faint-of-heart. Backpackers generally prefer lodging at hostels and “roughing it out” to staying at plush hotels. They also rely on budget air-lines, public transport and walking, to get from place to place, which proves to be not just cost-effective but eco-friendly, too. Backpackers usually travel light for obvious, practical reasons, so when engaging in backpacker travel, a visit to the local grocery store or the Laundromat might indeed be a necessity; a boon to those who want to experience life as the Locals do.

Backpacker travel guides are now freely available, with regional advice and helpful tips, which would prove to be of immeasurable use to the traveler. A quick search on the Web reveals backpacker forums which would also help the potential backpacker clarify any questions or address any issues he/she may have.

Backpacking enables the traveler to experience the “real destination” and obtain a feel of the land, its people and culture, with no added artifice. A method of personal exploration and freedom, backpacker travel epitomizes independence and spontaneity, with none of the restrictive itineraries that organized, mainstream travel is famed for. Backpacker travel is about relying on your wits, trusting your instincts and journeying to the innermost regions of your soul, whilst exploring a hitherto little-known world, at its most authentic.
